29th July 2010 DICTIONARY FOR LIFE PROJECT

Rotary International is committed to helping the world with literacy, and Rotary Clubs have been asked to respond to the king athelstan leavers assembly 2010 001literacy needs in their own communities.

With this in mind the “Dictionary for Life” project was created, to encourage clubs to donate a personal copy of an excellent Dictionary, to children around the age of 11 years and who will be moving up into Secondary school.

So on Thursday 22 July, President Peter Basset, Janet Bacon and Hilary Buzasi went along to King Athelstan School Assembly armed with the Dictionaries. The School Leavers performed several sketches regarding school activities. However, a very touching part was when each one of the Leavers stood up and thanked a particular member of Staff for helping them in School. There then followed a variety of photos showing the Leavers doing all sorts of activities in School and out. When the pictures flashed on the screen of Kids Out at Thorpe Park, an almighty cheer went up and we could see how much they enjoyed that day out.

President Peter Basset made a wonderful speech to the children, as a past Head Teacher all those years of experience showed us how we should communicate with our youngsters. The current Head Teacher Eking athelstan leavers assembly 2010 004mily Newton, asked the children if they could guess what job Peter had at the school. Yes, one child got it right he was of course the Head Teacher at King Athelstan some years ago. It was a wonderful morning and so encouraging seeing just how well behaved and interested the children were. Some of the little ones had come in dressed as Pirates, on the way out one little Pirate walked past us with his hands outstretched his shoulders hunched up and an expression which said; I don`t know what the hell is going on but I better go with the flow. Absolutely priceless! It was a wonderful Assembly and we hope all the Leavers will find their own personal Dictionary really useful as they move up to Senior School

End.
